Wallabies player Dan Vickerman has accepted responsibility for conceding a penalty during the weekend's match against Italy when he back-chatted the referee.

The penalty earned the team a 10m march up the field and gave Italy a kicking position.

Wallabies captain James Horwill said his team must improve its discipline throughout the tournament.

Vickerman said he had let the team down with his silly backchat.
