A bizarre tragedy yesterday killed two horses before a hurdle race at Newbury racecourse in Berkshire, UK.
Hundreds of spectators were shocked and appalled as Fenix Two and Marching Song reared up and screamed in the parade ring and fell to the ground 'like stones'.
A number of people said they felt tingling as they walked around the paddock before the incident, which appeared to come from the grass, and three said they had got electric shocks off the horses.
It is thought the horses suffered electric shocks from underground cables that may have been punctured during recent drilling to aerate the ground.
The area's electricity board later carried out an investigation of the paddock and the horses are going through post-mortem examinations.
Some believe the two horses which died were the only ones wearing steel plates, not alloy shoes.
