Thorpedo bombed out 9/11/2011 12:00:00 AM

Ian Thorpe has failed to make the 100m butterfly final at the FINA World Cup in Beijing. Thorpe's comeback has had plenty of press, although so far the Olympian has been unable to deliver. Today Thorpe managed the 13th fastest time of 54.35sec in the 100m butterfly heats.

‘‘I guess putting yourself out there and racing like this is not good for your ego - but I’m comfortable with that,’’ Thorpe said after his 100m butterfly heat.

‘‘It was about the same time as I swam in Singapore (comeback meet last week) so I am happy with how I technically put the race together.

‘‘This World Cup has definitely been tougher mentally than it has been physically".

Thorpe will be in Tokyo this weekend for the World Cup series final. Thorpe in his heyday won 11 World titles, set 13 individual World records and collected five Olympic metals. Its been five years since Thorpe last competed, maybe too much of a dry spiel.
