Canterbury CEO Todd Greenberg said they were not aware Ryan Tandy had a gambling problem when he joined them last year.
Some reports have surfaced which indicate Tandy's problem has been ongoing for some time.
Greenberg said they had done a large number of background checks through his manager, Sam Ayoub, and had been given glowing references of him personally and professionally.
Ayoub was also raided last week.
Meanwhile, the team are getting back to business as usual.
Canterbury captain Andrew Ryan said the club had made the right decision in standing Tandy down and now the team were focusing on preparing for their games.
