Scott Watters has just been named new coach for St Kilda to help the club contend for 2012 AFL premiership. Watters was the Collingwood Assistant coach for the last two years, and has said his always admired the spirit, leadership and defensive skills of St Kilda.
Watters believes that he will need to rebuild some areas within the club, and build upon certain aspects like player development. "I think where football is right now, certainly you want to contend, but at the same time you need to rebuild," said Watters, who has been appointed on a three-year term.
"It's a constant process and one doesn't mutually exclude the other.
"We've got some really talented kids on our list, that will need to earn the opportunity to play, but you've got opportunities that are going to be there.
Watters said the Saints, who played in grand finals in 2009 and 2010, were admired AFL-wide for the "defensive DNA" his predecessor Ross Lyon had instilled.
It looks to be a big year ahead for Watters, with St Kildas performance to be seen in 2012.
