Sam Thaiday will take over as Brisbane Broncos captain when Darren Lockyer retires later this year.

Coach Anthony Griffin was faced with a difficult decision choosing between Thaiday, Corey Parker and Alex Glenn to lead the team, and said Thaiday would be a strong leader for them.

He said, "Sam has got a very strong character and he's really grown as a person over the last few years, not only as a player but he's taken on a lot more responsibility within the group as he's aged. He's got the respect of everyone in the club, the players, the coaching staff."

Thaiday said he was honoured to have been chosen and he had always looked up to fellow indigenous player Gorden Tallis when he was captain of the club.
