Skipper Ricky Ponting will retire from international cricket at the end of Australia's World Cup campaign, according to British newspaper The Daily Mail.
Ponting is Australia's best-performing cricket captain but is said to be sick of having to prove why he should stay and wishes to quit before he is fired.
If India beats Australia in their quarter-final it is believed he will resign then, otherwise will end his national career on a high note if they win the Cup overall.
Ponting has said he wants to captain a UK county team once again. He previously skippered Somerset in 2004.
A Cricket Australia spokesman said they had no knowledge of an impending retirement announcement from Ponting.
