A world-class training centre for the racing industry is being proposed for the former tote building at Warwick Farm.

TAFE is applying for $15 million in federal government funding to build the centre, backed by Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys said the training centre was a necessity as the industry is under-resourced for trackwork riders, stablehands and jockeys.

ATC chairman John Cornish has proposed the use of its club offices at Canterbury as an apprentice school in the meantime, which is now subject to approval.
