Darren Lockyer has announced he will not play in the Broncos match against in Friday's NRL preliminary final at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The captain decided not to play after undergoing surgery on his left cheekbone on Sunday and realising the recovery time was just too short.

A replacement for Lockyer is still to be decided.
