Is Bahrain Safe for F1 7/06/2011 2:23:14 PM

The international campaigning organisation Avaaz is unhappy with Formula One's decision to reinstate the Grand Prix in Bahrain in October this year and disputes F1's assurances that political unrest there has subsided.

They say the FIA only spoke to organisations which support the government in Bahrain and insist that human rights abuses continue.

FIA president Jean Todt told the BBC yesterday their special envoy to Bahrain had found 'a stable situation' there and many authorities were encouraging a return to normalcy .

However, Avaaz campaign director Alex Wilks said that the information provided to the FIA was the Bahrain-based National Institute of Human Rights, which has close ties with the Bahraini government.

Wilks added that police had been using tear gas, rubber bullets and sound grenades to break up peaceful marches, killing and injuring dozens of people in the past week alone.
