South Africa yesterday thrashed India by an innings and six runs at the Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium in Nagpur.
Fast bowler Dale Steyn (3-57) and left-arm spinner Paul Harris (3-76) shared six wickets to bowl out India for 319 following on.
It was India's first Test defeat under their captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, since he took the position in 2008.
The South Africans could reclaim the No.1 ranking from India if they manage to draw the second and final Test which starts in Kolkata on Sunday.
