Former rugby league international John Hopoate has been convicted and fined $1,000 for his part in a fatal bashing incident outside the Trademark Hotel in Kings Cross, Sydney in December last year.

Hopoate pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was fined and placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

He had been as a responsible service of alcohol officer at the venue when the incident happened.

Wilson Duque Castillo, 33, was beaten up and Hopoate had punched and kicked the victim while he was being held down on the ground.

Mr Castillo fell into a coma and never woke up. His younger brother suffered facial injuries in the brawl.

Lynn Matia, 35, a security guard at the hotel at the time, has been charged with the manslaughter of Mr Castillo.
