Lleyton Hewitt has defied his painful foot to advance to the second round at Wimbledon after beating Kei Nishikori 6-1 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (7-9) 6-3.
Hewitt said afterwards he had to block the pain out as much as possible and if it hadn't been Wimbledon, he would not have played.
Teen tennis sensation Bernard Tomic also did the Aussies proud on the grass courts as he beat former world No.3 Nikolay Davydenko 7-5 6-3 7-5 in under two hours.
Tomic confessed he had been worried about playing against the Russian in the first round, but the match had given him confidence.
He will play Igor Andreev in the next round and Hewitt will face Swedish fifth seed Robin Soderling.
