The president of Hawthorn Hawks, Jeff Kennett has written to the AFL requesting it change its policy regarding illegal drugs.

Hawks midfielder Travis Tuck was banned for 12 games yesterday after his overdose at the weekend.

The Hawks believe the young player would have been better off if the club had been made aware the first time he'd tested positive.

Tuck has been struggling with depression and receving treatment for drug use for almost a year.
