Fernando Alonso has won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, giving Ferrari its first win of the season.

On a wet-dry track, drivers were challenged to make best use of their tyres as they switched from intermediates to slicks as conditions warranted. 

Mark Webber started out in pole but teammate Vettel quickly took the lead, and it looked as though the German would win another round, but a slow pit-stop was his undoing and Alonso took the lead.

Alonso opened up the gap and the race was his.

It was his 27th Formula One win, and puts him equal with three-times champion Jackie Stewart in the record books.

 Webber challenged Vettel's second position in the final laps but Red Bull issued team orders to prevent the Aussie from overtaking, while Felipe Massa tried to take Hamilton's fourth, as the Brit struggled to conserve fuel to finish.  

The pair clashed tyres, but Hamilton held onto fourth, Massa finished fifth. 

Nico Rosberg for Mercedes finished sixth, Sauber's Sergio Perez came in seventh, and Renault's Nick Heidfeld was eighth.

 Michael Schumacher was ninth for Mercedes and Jaime Alguersuari was 10th for Toro Rosso.
