Australia's cricket team retains the Chappell Hadlee Trophy after outstanding performances from Cameron White and skipper Ricky Ponting who both hit half-centuries and clinched the series against New Zealand in Auckland.

White was unbeaten on 50 as Australia, chasing 200 to win off 34 overs in a rain-interrupted match, scored 4-202 with 17 balls to spare.

Ponting was on fire with 50 off 35 balls before he was leg-before to spinner Daniel Vettori who took 2-29.

Afterwards, Ponting said he was already looking ahead to the two-Test series against the Black Caps which begins on March 19.

Vice-captain Michael Clarke is expected to return from Sydney back to Wellington in a few days' time ready to prepare for next week's first Test.

Ponting said he felt the distracting  incidents of the week involving Clarke had really tested his team's determination.
