The Caulfield Race Day is the first of the major Cup races to take place in the Spring Carnival. Held at the Melbourne Racing Course, this year on 17th October, it is an important forerunner to the Caulfield Cup - the winner at Caulfield qualifies to take part in the Cup in November.

It is the richest race of its type in the world, is open to throughbreds 3 years old and over, and is run over 2,400 metres. 11 horses to date have won ‘the cups double’ - winning both the Caulfield and Caulfield Cups in the same year. A horse called Ethereal is the most recent to have achieved this in 2001.

The total prize money this year is above the $2.5 mark, some contrast to the first Cup in 1879.

Last year’s Caulfield Cup was won by international rider “All The Good” in a fantastic staying performance. Going by the Autumn and Winter Carnivals this year, the coming Spring Carnival is going to be very exciting!

Racing in Australia has enjoyed great success with races such as the world famous Caulfield Cup, the so-called race that stops a nation, which has recently attracted many international entries. In Australia, the most famous horse was Phar Lap, who raced from 1928-1932 (though originally bred in New Zealand). Phar Lap carried 9st 12lbs to win the 1930 Caulfield Cup. In 2003-2005 the mare Makybe Diva became the first and only racehorse to ever win the Caulfield Cup three times, let alone in consecutive years. In harness racing, Paleface Adios became a household name during the 1970s, while Cardigan Bay, a pacing horse from New Zealand, enjoyed great success at the highest levels of American harness racing in the 1960s.
