The Caulfield Race Day is the first of the major Cup races to take place in the Spring Carnival. Held at the Melbourne Racing Course, this year on 17th October, it is an important forerunner to the Melbourne Cup - the winner at Caulfield qualifies to take part in the Cup in November.

It is the richest race of its type in the world, is open to throughbreds 3 years old and over, and is run over 2,400 metres. 11 horses to date have won ‘the cups double’ - winning both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the same year. A horse called Ethereal is the most recent to have achieved this in 2001.

The total prize money this year is above the $2.5 mark, some contrast to the first Cup in 1879.

Last year’s Caulfield Cup was won by international rider “All The Good” in a fantastic staying performance. Going by the Autumn and Winter Carnivals this year, the coming Spring Carnival is going to be very exciting!

It officially starts on the Group 1 Underwood Stakes Day at Caulfield.
